CONSERVE RIVERS & OCEANS
Water Security & Blue Ecosystems
Giving transparency to the future generations
The Conserve Rivers & Oceans initiative aims to strengthen water security and ecosystem health through integrated watershed development, springshed rejuvenation, river and wetland restoration, greywater management, pollution reduction, and marine ecosystem conservation. The initiative is dedicated to conserving and restoring 1 crore hectares of riverine and marine landscapes by 2050 to ensure long-term ecological health and sustainability.
Through community-led and science-based interventions, this pillar enhances groundwater recharge, stream baseflows, drinking water access, and climate resilience in vulnerable rural, urban, and coastal ecosystems. By protecting source waters, restoring degraded water bodies, and reducing pollution loads, the initiative supports climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable water management for present and future generations.
Objectives
- Restore and conserve degraded watersheds, springsheds, rivers, wetlands, and marine ecosystems to enhance long-term water security and ecological health.
- Improve groundwater recharge, stream baseflows, and surface water storage to strengthen drinking water access and drought resilience in water-stressed regions.
- Reduce water pollution and wastewater discharge into rivers, lakes, and oceans through decentralised treatment, reuse systems, and solid-waste management.
- Protect source waters and riparian ecosystems to improve water quality, biodiversity, and climate resilience in vulnerable landscapes.
- Strengthen community-led water governance and asset management systems to ensure long-term functionality and sustainability of restored water bodies.
